An indoor grill is a great way to prepare all kinds of food. Did you know that you can prepare some great tasting shiitake mushrooms with just a few minutes of your time? Grab your favorite open style indoor grill, whether it’s a George foreman grill or any other brand, and a few shiitake mushrooms around 8 ounces each. This recipe works best with an open style grill that lays flat, rather than a closed style or contact grill that has two sides that close on each other.

You will want to begin by rinsing off the mushrooms to get rid of any dirt or other debris. Then, take a few minutes to remove the stems from all of your mushrooms since that part does not taste too good. Here is where the real fun starts, put all of the following ingredients into one bowl to create a marinade for your mushrooms…

  • 1 tablespoon of crushed garlic
  • 1 teaspoon of minced rosemary
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon of tamari
  • 1 tablespoon of sesame seed oil
  • 1 dash of salt and black pepper

These ingredients alone will taste great as a marinade, but if you want to add a little bit extra into the mix then you can throw in 1 teaspoon of maple syrup. A lot of people don’t expect the maple syrup but it really binds all of the ingredients together to create something very tasty. Plus, the sugar helps to add just a bit of caramelization during the grilling process.

After you have mixed all of the ingredients together, throw in the shiitake mushrooms and let them marinate for at least 5 minutes. Don’t let them marinate for any more than 10 minutes or else the mushrooms will get soggy — soggy mushrooms don’t grill very well.

The final part of the recipe is quite simple. All you need to do is take the mushrooms out of the marinade and throw them onto your grill. Even though this part is simple, you definitely need to pay attention so your mushrooms don’t burn. The secret to a great tasting mushroom is to let it get lightly charred but not all the way crisp. Pay attention to the color and don’t turn or flip the mushrooms until they turn rather dark.

There are a large number of fun recipes that you can use with almost any indoor grill. Take some time to learn as many recipes as you can and I guarantee that you will never get sick of grilling in your own kitchen.
